Carpet buying guide · Springfield, MO
Carpet buying guide for Springfield, MO homes
New carpet changes how a room feels the moment you walk in barefoot. It also has more choices than any other floor: fiber, style, density, pad and color all matter, and the labels don't always make the differences clear. This guide explains what to compare, so you can choose carpet for your Springfield home with confidence and spend your time at Springfield Carpet One on the styles that fit.
Match the carpet to the traffic
The most common carpet mistake is choosing for looks alone. Start with who uses the room and how.
| Room | What matters most |
|---|---|
| Bedrooms | Softness and comfort. Lighter traffic lets you choose for feel. |
| Living and family rooms | Durability, stain resistance and a texture that hides footprints. |
| Stairs and halls | The toughest construction you can find. Every step lands in the same spot. |
| Basements | Durability and easy cleanup. We check the floor underneath at your measure. |
| Homes with pets | Stain protection and a tight construction claws won't easily snag. |
Know your fibers
- Nylon: known for bouncing back from heavy foot traffic. A common choice for stairs, halls and family rooms.
- Polyester: soft with rich color, and often easier on the budget. Well suited to bedrooms and lower-traffic rooms.
- Triexta: a newer fiber that is soft and stain resistant.
- Wool: a natural fiber with a luxurious feel, usually at a higher price.
Each style's label or spec sheet lists its fiber. Feel a few side by side in the showroom; the difference is easy to notice.
Cut pile, loop or both
- Plush and saxony (cut pile) have a smooth, even surface that looks formal but shows footprints and vacuum lines.
- Textured (cut pile with twisted yarns) is the everyday favorite, because it hides footprints and wear.
- Loop and Berber are tough and hide dirt well, but pets' claws can catch on loose loops.
- Patterned cut and loop adds design, and is popular on stairs where a pattern hides wear.

The bend test for density
Fold a sample back on itself. If you can easily see the backing between the tufts, the carpet is less dense. Tightly twisted yarns packed close together tend to hold their look longer, so in busy rooms, density and twist matter more than how thick the carpet feels in your hand.
Don't skip the pad
Pad is the layer you never see, but you feel it every day. The right pad makes carpet more comfortable and helps it stand up to traffic. In our estimate, pad is its own line, so you see its price before you decide. Ask us which pad fits your carpet and your room.
Colors that live well
Showroom lighting is not your living room. Take samples home and check them in daylight and lamplight next to your walls and furniture. Mid-tones and flecked or multicolor carpets hide everyday dirt better than very light or very dark solids. With pets, a color near their coat color hides hair between vacuums.
Brands on our showroom floor
Our carpet lineup includes styles from Dream Weaver, Mohawk PetPremier, Godfrey Hirst, Tarkett Home and Extreme Value. Each one on our carpet page shows its material price per square foot. If pets are part of the picture, ask us to pull the Mohawk PetPremier styles.
Stairs, seams and the installed price
Stairs are fit by hand, step by step, and patterned carpet has to line up from tread to tread. In larger rooms, carpet may need seams because it comes on rolls of a set width, and good seam placement keeps them out of main walkways and away from window light. Talk through seams, stairs and pad with us as part of your project estimate.
Our carpet cost guide shows how a room is priced. Your installed price adds installation and pad, and includes tear-out and haul-away of your old carpet. Floor prep is added only if your floor needs it. Our online estimator prices every room with an installed price and a materials-only price, and your final total is confirmed at your free in-home measure.
