Vinyl plank vs laminate · Springfield, MO

LVP vs laminate: which wood-look floor fits your Springfield home?

If you want the look of wood without the cost and care of real hardwood, the choice usually comes down to two floors: luxury vinyl plank (LVP) and laminate. They look alike in a photo, but they are built from different materials, and that decides where each one does its best work. This guide covers the real differences and the questions to ask, so your visit to Springfield Carpet One is quick and focused.

The short answer

How each one is built

Vinyl plank has a printed wood or stone design under a clear wear layer. Below that is a core, either rigid stone-plastic or a softer wood-plastic blend, and often an attached pad. Because the core is plastic based, many vinyl planks are made to handle water on the surface without swelling.

Laminate starts with a dense fiberboard core made from wood fibers. A photographic wood layer sits on top under a hard, clear surface layer. That surface is what makes laminate so resistant to scratches and scuffs. The wood-fiber core is also why traditional laminate can swell if water gets into the seams, although some newer laminates are built to resist water.

Both are usually click-together floors that float over the subfloor, and both need a flat floor underneath to look and feel right.

Three things to check before you buy

  1. The water rating for the exact product. "Water resistant" and "waterproof" are not the same promise. Check what the product says about water and which rooms it is suited for.
  2. The wear rating. For vinyl plank, compare wear layer thickness. For laminate, compare how the surface is rated for wear. Busy homes and big pets call for more.
  3. The finish. A matte, textured surface hides scratches, dust and paw prints better than a glossy one.

Also look at a larger sample, not just a small chip. Plank length, width and how often the pattern repeats change the look of a whole room.

Straight answers

LVP and laminate questions

Which is better for a kitchen, LVP or laminate?

Most people choose vinyl plank for kitchens because many vinyl planks are made to handle water on the surface. If you like a laminate, check that product's moisture guidance and room suitability first.

Is laminate more scratch resistant than vinyl plank?

Laminate's hard surface layer is very scratch resistant. Vinyl plank also resists everyday wear, especially with a thicker wear layer and a textured finish. No floor is completely scratch proof.

Can I put vinyl plank or laminate in my basement?

Vinyl plank is a common choice over concrete. Either way, we check your floor at your free in-home measure and tell you what it needs.

Do you install both?

Yes. Professional installation, and your price includes tear-out and haul-away of the old floor.

Does the price on your website include installation?

The prices on our flooring pages are material only. Your flooring estimate adds installation for each room, with tear-out and haul-away included.
